FOOTBALLERS of all ages took to the pitch yesterday to raise funds for a children's charity.

Eight teams played on Sunday at Dean Bank Recreation Ground, in Ferryhill, to raise funds for the charity Make a Child Smile, which helps children from Teesside, County Durham and North Yorkshire who are ill or underprivileged.

The majority of players were youngsters, but a few older players from Ferryhill Workingmen's Club joined in.

The teams played from 9am to 5pm and all admission costs and profits made from competitions and refreshment sales went to the charity.

Rita Foster, club president, said: "You hear so many stories about local children suffering from illnesses and we thought we'd do something to help such a good cause.

"We have had a range of teams playing football today and I think they have all enjoyed being part of an event that raises money for charity."

Crissy Adair, a canteen assistant at the ground, got up early to help make sandwiches for players and visitors.

She said: "All money made from food sales goes to the charity, so I don't mind helping out. My two sons are playing today and have been looking forward to the games."
