THE PUBLIC is asked to beware of missing gully covers after a recent spate of thefts.

Concern has grown on safety grounds over the absence of the gully gratings, which leave sizeable openings at the sides of roads.

An estimated 200 gully covers have been stolen over the past few weeks in the Wearside area.

Phil Barrett, Sunderland City Council's director of development and regeneration, said: "Some of the covers have a substantial drop beneath them and there is an obvious safety risk to cyclists and motorists, as well as children and adult pedestrians, should they step down from the kerb.

"We're urging people to be extra vigilant and to report any missing covers to us immediately.

"We would also appeal to anyone with information on the thefts to contact the police."

Mr Barrett said the council is replacing the gully covers, but there is a cost implication of £30,000 to date.

"The gully covers are bulky and heavy, so it would take at least two people to remove and carry them.

"We'll be replacing the stolen gully tops with heavy duty plastic covers that have been used successfully in other parts of the UK."

Members of the public can report a missing gully cover in their area should contact the drainage section within the city council's community and cultural services section, on 0191-553 5156.

They are also asked to contact their local police station immediately.
