YOUNG people will be able to have their views published online thanks to a joint initiative between The Northern Echo and Darlington Borough Council.

The rE-view project will give young film-makers, journalists and photographers the opportunity to submit reviews on events and activities taking place in Darlington and the region.

The reviews will be posted on a website hosted by The Northern Echo.

Already, nearly 100 young people have been recruited by the council's youth service to film, record and write their opinions on films, bands, books, shops, fashion, cafes and sporting events.

Peter Barron, Editor of The Northern Echo, said: "I consider the rE-view project to be a really exciting initiative because it gives young people a real voice in Darlington, as well as adding a new dimension to The Northern Echo's digital activities."

It is hoped more young people will log on to have their say and post their reviews and comments.

Digital media youth worker Mike Clark said: "My job is to run the youth service's eVibe website, but we felt it was seriously lacking the input of young people.

The idea here is to get young people to ask questions and get their opinions on issues that affect them.

"Instead of having people who are a lot older than themselves putting their views forward, they can say it themselves.

"Any young person in town can sign up and there will also be space where other people can add their comments and views."

Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Borough Council cabinet member for children's services, said: "This is a great way for young people to have their say on a wide range of issues and has already proved to be very popular.

"I am delighted with the support The Northern Echo is offering to provide young people this forum."

Anyone aged 11 to 25 interested in taking part should call Mr Clark on 07939-018648 or e-mail michael.clark@darlington.gov.uk The Youth Service would also like to hear from community groups, musicians, sports clubs and other organisations who would be willing to let the young reporters review their events and activities.

Chance to learn and improve your media skills

Sian Williams, one of the young people who will be contributing to the rE-view site, explains what to expect

IT'S an exciting time to be a young person in Darlington.

A new rE-view group has been established to provide a mass of opportunities for enthusiastic and hard-working youths.

RE-view began with only a dozen volunteers, but soon attracted the attention of more than 70 youngsters.

The idea is a simple one - give younger people the chance to write about issues they feel strong about. It can be anything, from the latest movie, CD or concert to the latest fashion trends.

If they have an opinion, it can now be shared with people from the same age group and beyond with the help of the internet.

The site also welcomes articles on serious issues. If someone holds strong opinions about school uniform, the new age for smoking or even thoughts on global warming - all issues and ideas are welcome. The experience provides an insightful look at the media industry and helps the people involved to gain writing and multi-media skills.

Many members of the team have grabbed this opportunity and are using it as a steppingstone, helping them to build up an impressive portfolio.

With a wide range of equipment, you can dip in and out of a variety of skills, including journalism, directing, editing, photography and much more.

Learning from experienced professionals and also from each other, get involved and be prepared to learn so much more than when sitting in a classroom.
