PUPILS experienced a taste of Africa this week as their school hosted a visit of staff from their Tanzanian link school.
Our Lady and St Thomas School, in Willington, was visited by two members of staff from Kivulini Primary School, who are staying in County Durham until Monday.
The work between the two schools began four years ago and has developed into a programme of learning for the children and teachers.
Two members of staff from the Tanzanian school, Henry Muvungi and Asseri Ngowi, worked with children at the school all week, teaching them about African culture.
They also met parents, governors and council officials and explored the North-East.
Mr Muvungi said: "It is great to come to an English school and see the differences between our schools.
"The children have been very charming and friendly and I look forward to teaching them about our culture."
Ellie Mavin, seven, said: "It is a great project and I really like finding out about children and schools in another country."
Headteacher Frances Gowland said: "It is a great experience as it gives the children a chance to learn about completely different cultures to their own.
"We really enjoy having the guests here."
Staff from Our Lady and St Thomas will travel to Tanzania in February for a reciprocal visit.
