The Bank of England pumped billions into The Northern Rock as savers stampeded to withdraw their money last week, new figures have revealed today.
The bank was able to draw on £2.9 billion in cash through the emergency financial assistance agreed with the Bank fo England.
Analysts believe the money may have been needed in the face of unprecedented customer withdrawals.
The Bank of Engalnd's weekly accounts show how it pumped £11.3 billion into the markets to shore up confidence.
