The Chancellor is to introduce new regulations to safeguard investors' money in the event of a banking crisis.
In the wake of The Northern Rock's problems Chancellor Alistair Darling believes new measures are needed to restore confidence.
Although savings are guaranteed up to £35,000 at present, he is believed to favour new measures that will increase the level to £100,000.
