A PROJECT to celebrate a village's Roman past is to be launched next week.
The Friends of Longovicium - the Roman fort in Lanchester - has organised an open evening to celebrate the completion of the Looking for Romans project.
The event takes place at 7.30pm on Monday, in Lanchester Community Centre, Newbiggin Lane, Lanchester.
David Mason, Durham County Council's archaeologist, will speak at the event, and visitors will have the opportunity to meet members of the friends group.
On show will be the resources produced in the Looking for Romans project, including an education pack for primary and secondary schools, a self-guided Roman walk leaflet, a book titled Longovicium Lanchester's Roman Fort, and website pages on the Roman fort on Durham County Council's website.
Free copies of the walk leaflet will be available. Visitors will also be able to learn about the group's plans and how to join in.
The project is part of the Mineral Valleys Project, led by Natural England and co-ordinated by Groundwork West Durham and Darlington.
Copies of the book or the walk leaflet can be obtained from Bishop Auckland Tourist Information Centre on 01388-604922.
