THE Northern Echo is tonight hosting a public debate on whether Darlington should have an elected mayor.
Editor Peter Barron will chair the debate, which begins at Darlington Arts Centre at 7.30pm.
The panel comprises Stuart Hill from the "Yes" campaign, Alan Charlton from the "No" campaign, Middlesbrough elected mayor Ray Mallon and local government expert Dr Michael Macaulay from the University of Teesside.
Seats can be reserved by calling Carol Bellinger on 01325 505283. People can also turn up on the night.
Mr Barron said this morning: "Next week's referendum on whether Darlington should have an elected mayor is of great significance to the town's future.
"What is vital is that local people are as well informed as possible and have the opportunity to ask questions. This debate will help people understand the implications of saying yes or no."
