AN elderly couple who were burgled as they slept have had their “faith in people” restored after a business replaced a stolen TV.

Kenneth Dunsday and his 76-year-old wife Patricia were asleep when burglar Shane James broke into their Newton Aycliffe home in the early hours of October 1 – Mr Dunsday’s 82nd birthday.

The 21-year-old stole the couple’s 50 inch TV, which was later found discarded at the town’s railway station.

After hearing what happened, the management team at Gestamp, in the town, clubbed together to buy a new TV.

Plant director Wayne Reynoldson said: “We wanted to replace their TV to turn the negative of the burglary into a positive experience of community spirit.”

He added: “We are delighted to have been able to help a couple in our neighbourhood in their moment of disappointment and fear, and help them recognise the strong community spirit that exists in our area.”

The couple’s grandson, Steven Jackson, said: “After the burglary my nan and granddad were very shaken up – it took them a while to get over it.

“However, this has completely restored our faith in people, especially the community in Newton Aycliffe.

"They have really pulled together and done themselves proud.

“My nan and granddad were completely overwhelmed with the kindness shown by Gestamp and were over the moon with their new TV.”

He added his thanks to the community, Gestamp and Sergeant Andy Boyd and PC Michael Welch, of Newton Aycliffe Police.

James, of Creighton Road, Newton Aycliffe, appeared before magistrates in the on October 3 where he admitted burglary.

Three counts of theft from a motor vehicle, two counts of shoplifting and one count of fraud were also taken into consideration.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Durham Crown Court for sentencing tomorrow.
