POLICE are claiming a success after a high-visibility operation aimed at clamping down on speeding.

The operation was designed to deal with the additional traffic heading to Scarborough for the Gold Cup motorcycle race meeting at Oliver's Mount at the weekend.

And with only one serious injury accident recorded in their eastern area they believe their efforts were worthwhile.

High visibility patrols operating under the auspices of Operation Helical, the force's hard-line road safety campaign, covered all the routes leading into and out of the resort.

They reported that the vast majority of drivers and riders acted responsibly and were happy to play their part in ensuring a successful outcome.

"Of course there were exceptions; one motor cyclist was reported for speeding at 103mph on the A64 at Copmanthorpe and another for 100mph on the A170 near Thornton Dale," said a spokesman.

"Both will soon find themselves fast-tracked to the magistrates' court."

The road accident involved a car and a motorcycle on the A64 at the Staxton roundabout on Sunday morning. The rider was taken to Scarborough hospital with serious injuries.

Across the force area over the weekend, 84 people were dealt with for speeding - only ten of whom were motorcyclists. Another 55 were dealt with for seat-belt offences and 117 breath tests were administered - of which only three were positive.

Deputy Chief Constable Adam Briggs said: "Once again the weekend has shown that the vast majority of road users are sensible law-abiding people who value their own lives and the lives of others.

"However there is a minority who seem to think that using excessive speed, ignoring seat belts and using mobile phones at the wheel is acceptable behaviour. We are determined to show them otherwise."
