ONE of the region's most famous landmarks has inspired the latest offering from a model manufacturer.

Durham Cathedral has been chosen as the new limited edition model produced by Lilliput Lane, the company best known for its range of miniature cottages.

Over the past four years, designer Gary Todd studied photographs, referred to Google Earth and used computer-aided design to capture every detail of the historic site.

He said: "Our version of Durham Cathedral is the most challenging project I have ever worked on at Lilliput Lane, and I'm delighted with the result."

The company, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, is best known for its reproductions of quintessentially English landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament.

The company's latest product has received a warm reception from cathedral representatives.

Chapter steward Anne Heywood said: "The model is a tangible reminder of the cathedral for those who have visited.

"No part of the building is the same, so to be able to reproduce it on this scale is amazing."

Despite a price tag of £199, commercial director Angela Metcalfe is confident that loyal collectors will not be deterred.

She said: "Part of the nature of collecting is getting something while the opportunity is there, and we know there is a huge amount of interest.

"Often a true, dedicated collector will tell you, it's not the price of the piece it's whether or not they like it."

Mr Todd will be present to sign models at the launch, which is to take place in the Prior's Hall, at the cathedral, from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, September 22.

A special edition of the iconic Sanctuary Knocker has been produced especially for the event, and will be given away free of charge with every purchase.
