A SINGER diagnosed with breast cancer was on the march to help others by completing a sponsored trek at the weekend.

Pat Greensmith, 45, from Willington, County Durham, performs across the North-East under the name of Chyrelle Addams.

She discovered a lump while on holiday in May, becoming one of more than 25,000 women a year to be affected by cancer.

She is undergoing chemotherapy and has set up a fund to buy equipment for hospitals in the region.

The eight-mile walk, on Saturday, was from the Spectrum Leisure Centre, Willington, to the Bishop Auckland viaduct and back, with several walkers wearing fancy dress.

Despite her illness, Mrs Greensmith aims to do as much walking as she can and was joined by about 30 family members, friends and neighbours.

She said: "Obviously, I have to be careful because of my treatment but it would be unfair to ask others to do it and not join in myself.

"I am so grateful to everyone who is joining in and just want to raise as much money as possible to help other people like myself."

Her neighbour, Kay Wigham, who took part, said: "We have been overwhelmed by the amazing response we have had from the public. Several people have been knocking on my door recently for sponsorship forms.

"The more people that know about the appeal the better, as it's a great cause."

Mrs Greensmith hopes the Chyrelle Addams Breast Cancer Appeal will raise £65,000 for mammogram machines and other equipment to help diagnose and treat the disease.
