CHANGES to car parking arrangements in parts of Stockton town centre come into force today.

A short stay system is being introduced in some streets, including the Bridge Road area, Silver Street and Norton Road, from the Buffs Club towards the High Street.

Charges are 20p for up to half an hour or £1 for an hour, to make more spaces available for visitors. Longer stay parking will be along Bath Lane North, where day tickets cost £2.20.

Mains electric ticket machines have been replaced with solar powered versions.

Councillor Bob Cook, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: "The changes will improve the turn-over of available parking spaces, and follows consultation with local businesses.

"Some controls over town centre parking have outlived their usefulness, and the changes will improve parking for visitors."
