CANCER survivors took part in an emotional lap of honour before a 24-hour relay to raise funds for research into the disease.
The 25 men and women, all wearing lilac T-shirts bearing the word Survivor, started the Cancer Research UK Relay For Life event at Redcar Rugby Club on Saturday morning.
Eighteen teams of ten people, including families with young children, then took turns to run or walk around the perimeter of the rugby pitch for 24 hours.
They were cheered on by about 500 spectators.
The Redcar relay is expected to raise about £8,000.
Event organiser and two-time breast cancer survivor Sharyn Clarkson, 54, said: "All the teams came together to celebrate their fundraising achievements.
"It was a day of hope and remembrance and a time when people could see that their efforts have really helped to make a difference."
Cancer Research UK is looking for volunteers to join and form local committees for other community events.
