DANCE enthusiasts filled Eldon Lane's club hall to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the Eldon Old Tyme Dance Club.

In late 1952, during the post-war era, when ballroom dancing was beginning to thrive, a group of young friends decided that a club should be formed in the Institute at Eldon, Bishop Auckland, to encourage the trend.

This club is still thriving 55 years later, with about 50 members travelling from all over the region to learn how to dance.

Winnifred Dines joined the club in 1970, with her mother, when her father died, and joined its committee in 1971.

She is now the longest-serving member of the group ,which is responsible for running the extensive timetable of classes and events.

She said: "The dance club is still very popular, attracting between 35 and 40 people to its events. A member with a broken shoulder has even turned up to celebrate the anniversary today.

"Members are mainly older people, if we get someone in their 60s, we think we have got some youngsters. Dancing is a great way for us all to keep fit."

Members old and new attended the celebration earlier this month.

The club is a member of 2D, a voluntary and community support organisation, based in Crook.

They can help local organisations to function more effectively and deliver quality services to their members.
