A SUNNYBROW schoolgirl is embarking on a nine-mile walk tomorrow to raise funds for a girl who lost her limbs after a life-threatening illness.
In January, 21-month old Tilly Lockey, from Consett, caught meningococcal septicaemia, a deadly form of meningitis that has no vaccination.
Tilly survived after being treated at Newcastle General Hospital but lost her hands and toes.
Lauren Watkin, 13, from Dovedale Avenue, Sunnybrow, is a student of Tilly's father, Adam Lockey, who teaches at Parkside School.
She heard about the Give Tilly a Hand appeal, which was set up to raise money to buy prosthetic hands for Tilly, and decided she wanted to do something to help.
On the walk from the Bishop Auckland viaduct to Brandon, Lauren will be joined by her mother, Andrea, 36, and grandmother, Gloria Dobson, 63.
Lauren said: "I just thought I wanted to do something extra to help such a good cause. I have raised a lot of sponsorship money from family, friends and local businesses but don't want to say how much yet because I want to surprise Mr Lockey."
Mrs Watkin said: "We are all very proud of Lauren for doing such a thoughtful thing for the little girl."
