MOVES to increase trade in a market town have been backed by Durham County Council's cabinet.
A draft action plan for Stanhope contains proposals to improve shops and services to attract visitors and give residents more choice.
The cabinet supported a draft action plan drawn up by consultants Miller Research for the County Durham Economic Partnership.
Miller's report followed a study last year which highlighted the potential for Stanhope to play a key role in the regeneration of Weardale, particularly as it is close to a proposed eco-village in Eastgate.
No funding has been earmarked for the plan and the outcome could depend on the Eastgate project getting planning permission next year.
The plan has been welcomed by traders and contains ideas such as branding and promoting local produce, installing seating, improving direction signs, creating pavement cafes and giving shops a co-ordinated image.
Crossing points and disabled parking bays would help shoppers on Front Street, and officers are investigating how to create more parking spaces.
Other suggestions include an open air arts festival, creating walking routes, using artwork to mark routes and improving facilities for cyclists.
Hanging baskets would brighten up the town, a community website would promote shops and services, and a loyalty card could be introduced in Stanhope and Weardale.
Clive Smithers, market town manager, said: "The plan is fantastic and there is no cash at present, but there are some elements which do not need money to get under way, such as a monthly meeting of traders that is already taking place.
"We are trying to identify a small amount of money to get straight on with some of the things we want to do.
"We can also identify current resources that can be used.
"The cabinet's support makes the case to One NorthEast that the plan is there."
