A PRIMARY school in Hartlepool has been highly praised following a visit from Government inspectors.

The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) visited St Teresa's RC Primary School, in June, and rated the school as outstanding in all seven key areas.

The report, which has been sent to parents, says: "St Teresa's Primary School is an outstanding school. Exceptionally high standards have been consistently maintained over the past five years and are well set to remain high."

The inspectors said the pupils' achievement was excellent, and was not limited to the basic subjects of English, mathematics and science.

The report added: "The work seen on display, in books and during lessons, shows a remarkable range of achievements.

"Their attitudes to learning are exemplary. This is very clear in the pride they take in their work.

"Behaviour is excellent and is a very positive influence on learning and the life of the school."

The quality of teaching and leadership at St Teresa's was also rated as outstanding.

In a letter sent to the 344 pupils, lead inspector Geoff Cooper said: "Your school is very special.

"The standards you retain in your work are very high and you make excellent progress.

"You told me you were 99 per cent excellently behaved. I did not see the one per cent that is not excellent."

Headteacher Eileen Cahir said: "I am delighted with the outcome of the Ofsted report.

"It is a fitting acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication of pupils, staff, parents, and governors, and a daunting challenge for sustainment in the years ahead."
