VILLAGERS have raised nearly £2,000 by holding a barbecue and dance.

The residents of Picton, near Appleton Wiske, Northallerton, were determined not to let the poor summer ruin their plans to help Butterwick hospice.

And, despite Picton Show being cancelled due to heavy rain, residents still managed to hold the Picton Show Barbecue and raised £1887.21 for the charity.

Committee member Sandra Goodrum said: "The money was raised from the annual barbecue and disco, which this year was held in Appleton Wiske Village Hall after the wet summer forced the cancellation of Picton Show.

"Our thanks go to the many people who supported the event. Picton is such a small village and it was a wonderful effort to raise such a large amount once again."

Mrs Goodrum thanked fellow committee members and all those who sponsored the event, as well as the residents and businesses who helped make it a success. The money was presented to Sue Vallely from Butterwick Hospice.
