TWO cancer units are to benefit from funds raised by the last mayor of Durham during his year in office.
Councillor Jeff Lodge collected £31,495.75 during his term in office, which ended in May.
Coun Lodge chose to split the money between two breast cancer causes.
During a ceremony held at the Gala Theatre, he presented cheques to Keith Callanan, a surgeon from the University Hospital of North Durham, and Dr Linsley Lunt, a consultant radiologist from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Gateshead.
Coun Lodge said: "It makes me very proud to be able to hand over this money.
"I never dreamed we would raise £30,000. Everyone has done exceptionally well."
Mr Callanan said his share of the money would allow his hospital's Surgical Oncology Fund to buy a mammotome, which will boost early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
The money handed to Dr Lunt will go to the Women's Cancer Detection Society.
