STORAGE PLAN
THE Potter Group is keen to allay any fears over its application to store chemical products at its distribution centre at Melmerby Industrial Estate, near Ripon (Echo, August 27 and 31).
Our record in storing chemical products there is exemplary. For more than 25 years we have received, stored and transported a great variety of chemicals in volume and no member of the public has been harmed.
We continue to conform to, or exceed, stringent standards and regulations to protect the wellbeing of the public, our staff and business associates.
The centre is designed and equipped to conform to the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 and the Health and Safety Executive's Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations, and we have strict procedures that include regular and thorough staff training.
We are in regular contact with representatives of government organisations such as the local authorities, fire brigade, Environment Agency and Health and Safety Executive, who make regular visits and inspections.
Harrogate Borough Council's planning committee took these factors into consideration and reasonably concluded we had met all necessary requirements.
Many of the items stored, such as aerosol products - while included in the regulations - are the same as those found in virtually every bathroom or kitchen. - Matthew Lamb, Managing Director, The Potter Group, Melmerby.
