YORKSHIRE DITCHED
REDCAR and Cleveland is an administrative name; it is not the name of a place. Nevertheless, the Labour group on the borough council proposed that it should replace Yorkshire as the postal address for our borough.
Because a sense of place is important to all of the people of the borough, I proposed that we hold a referendum of residents to choose between Yorkshire and Redcar and Cleveland.
Labour would not accept this amendment, indicating that it is not interested in giving the people a voice. This was an ideal opportunity to put real democracy into action and Labour voted against it. _ Councillor Valerie Halton, Conservative, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.
