A NORTH-EAST police force is recruiting new special constables.
Applications to join Durham Police as a Special Constable will be open from 9.30am on Friday until 5pm on September 28.
‘Specials’ are volunteer police officers who commit a minimum of 16 hours per month to supporting front-line policing across County Durham and Darlington.
They have the same powers as regular police officers, and wear the same uniform.
Chief Officer Dale Checksfield, head of Durham Special Constabulary, said: “Being a Special Constable is one of the most challenging roles a volunteer can do, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. As well as playing a vital role in supporting our front-line officers across the county, you’ll make friends and develop skills for life. We’re looking for people who want to make a real difference in their communities, and we welcome people from all backgrounds and all walks of life.”
Specials complete a rigorous training programme before qualifying and travel expenses within County Durham, training and equipment are provided.
Applicants must be 18 or over and must be physically fit enough to perform the role – fitness is tested annually.
Information roadshows for would-be applicants will be held at police headquarters in Durham today and tomorrow, at Bishop Auckland College on September 17 and the Dolphin Centre in Darlington on September 18.
