This is a blockbuster of a wine of 14 per cent alcohol, dark red but purply at the edges.
It's got a rich dark plum and red cherries bouquet, with a palate of full dark fruit and chocolate.
This really is a full-bodied wine, best with strong meat dishes. The best organic wine I've tasted to date.
It comes from the Colchagua Valley of Chile and is made from that country's signature grape variety, Carmenére. You could certainly drink this one on its own but beware you'll get nearly 11 units to the bottle! Oddbins have it on sale at £4.79, it's worth more in my opinion.
On the same shelves at £5.99 is a cracking Portugese wine called Portal A'guia from the Ribatejo region. It's a blend of four grape varieties including tinta roriz and syrah.
This is not a tannic wine but one full of fruit blending well with acid and 13.5 per cent alcohol. The makers "Alorna" recommend game, roast meats and strong cheeses to accompany. This is the best Portugese wine I've tasted this year.
