WRITER Bill Bryson has launched a week of events to promote peacefulness at a picturesque North-East location.
Durham and Northumberland are set to become the national homes of peace and tranquillity as the two counties team up for a week dedicated to relaxation.
The idea was dreamed up by tourism chiefs to encourage people to take time out from the stresses and strains of day-to-day life and indulge in some rest and relaxation.
Mr Bryson, who is Durham University's chancellor, said: "Durham is the most wonderful city. It can be both awe-inspiring and delightfully intimate at the same time.
"Whether I'm walking in the Botanic Garden or finding a moment of tranquillity in the magnificent cathedral or on Palace Green, it's a place that impresses me more and more with each visit.
"I have often said that there must be something in the water here, since the people of Durham are so happy and content."
A host of unique events will run throughout this week, including a peace and tranquillity evening at Durham Cathedral today, when the venue will remain open until 9pm.
The Treasures of St Cuthbert display will be free of charge and a service of Compline will take place, which is traditionally conducted by monks before sleep.
Bamburgh Castle will host Reiki and relaxation sessions tomorrow and Wednesday, and Northumbrian pipes will serenade visitors to Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum with soft and peaceful melodies on Thursday.
Housesteads Roman Fort, at Bardon Mill, near Hexham, will hold a Cloudwatching Week, dedicated to the restful pastime.
And the award-winning inn the Rose and Crown at Romaldkirk will be offering a Peace and Tranquillity Menu, featuring 'slow food' from Teesdale producers.
