Missing Madeleine McCann's father has arrived at a Portuguese police station to face fresh questioning over his daughter's disappearance.

Before attending the police station, Gerry McCann, 39, insisted any suggestion his wife, Kate, also 39, was involved in their daughter's disappearance was "ludicrous".

Writing on his blog, on the findmadeleine.com website, Mr McCann said: "Anyone who knows anything about the 3rd May knows that Kate is completely innocent."

A short time earlier Mrs McCann had left a Portuguese police station amid fears she could be charged over her daughter's disappearance.

Kate McCann was questioned for five hours at the headquarters of the Policia Judiciaria - Portugal's CID - in Portimao today, following 11 hours of questioning yesterday.

She was made an "arguida", or formal suspect, at noon today before detectives questioned her on 22 key points about what happened to Madeleine.

It is understood that detectives suggested to Mrs McCann in questioning on Thursday that traces of her daughter's blood had been found in a Renault Scenic the family hired 25 days after Madeleine disappeared.

It is understood Mrs McCann told the officers there was "no way" this could be the case.

Four-year-old Madeleine disappeared from the family's holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on May 3.
