A TEESDALE hotel will battle with another County Durham retreat for a regional award.

Headlam Hall Hotel, near Barnard Castle and Seaham Hall, near Sunderland, will contest the NorthEast small hotel of the Year category in One NorthEast's tourism awards, with the winner due to be announced in a gala ceremony on September 19.

Headlam Hall owner John Robinson is hoping judges recognise the effort that has been spent building up the business from its origins as a manor house and farm 20 years ago.

He said: "Our latest development is the Headlam Spa, which has cost more than £2m, but has considerably enhanced the tourism offer in this beautiful part of the county."

Of the competition with Seaham Hall, Mr Robinson said: "Neither of us can lose. It's great to be one of only two finalists alongside an internationally recognised jewel like Seaham Hall. Having developed the business over 20 years, with our loyal team of staff and new facilities, we might just pull it off on the night."
