AN exhibition about the history of the Canney Hill Potteries starts in Bishop Auckland today.
Volunteers at the Discovery Centre, in North Bondgate, have put together the event, running throughout this month.
The pottery, located between Canny Hill and Coundon, opened its doors in the mid 1840s, andclosed in 1913.
Some of its most recognisable pieces, featuring the Canny Hill Cats, have appeared on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.
Ann Miller, from Groundwork West Durham and Darlington, which runs the centre, said that the pottery was an important part of local history, but little was known about it.
She said: "This exhibition has been made possible through help of Alan Grace and Cliff Howe, who have researched the pottery for many years.
"We have also been liaising with Beamish, The Bowes Museum and The Weardale Museum, who have kindly loaned us pieces to display at the exhibition.
"The pieces on loan from Beamish will only be on show on Saturday. We have also had a very big response from the public, with information and items from the pottery, in which we could have around 16 pieces on show for the full length of the exhibition."
The exhibition opens at 10am. It is also open on Friday and Saturday, before returning next Wednesday to Saturday.
