FORMER amateur footballers got together for a celebration of grassroots soccer on Tuesday night.

Members of the West Auckland Town side of the Sixties met up at an exhibition organised by the Durham Amateur Football Trust, at the team's clubhouse.

Ken Collingwood, Arthur Gardner, Keith Hopper and Colin Summerson shared their memories, surrounded by photos and newspaper clippings of the team's 1961 FA Amateur Cup final appearance at Wembley.

John Phelan, from the trust, said: "They all have lots of experience of grassroots football and had lots of stories to tell."

The first-ever football World Cup, won by the club in 1909 and 1911, was also on display at the event, while film reels of memorable finals featuring Crook Town, Bishop Auckland and Willington AFC were screened.

An exhibition is taking place at West Auckland's Village Centre today and tomorrow, from 10am.
