THE life of a leading North Yorkshire family has become the subject of a new book.
A limited bound edition of Country House Scenes in North Yorkshire in the Nineteenth Century: Thorp Perrow, Barningham and the Milbank Family, has been written and published for Sir Anthony Milbank, of Barningham Park, near Richmond, by David Kirby, chairman of Snape Local History Group, near Bedale.
Sir Anthony presented a copy to Peter Smith, vice-chairman of the group, at a preview of its annual exhibition in the village.
The book, which draws on the Milbank family archives, embraces social affairs, local activities and local and national politics and contains extracts from diaries, political addresses, debates and news items.
There is special reference to Sir Frederick Milbank MP and his wife, Lady Alexina Harriet Milbank, with colour plates by Peter Smith, of Milbank portraits, paintings and photographs.
Mr Smith said the Milbank family were great benefactors of Snape during a long association with the area.
A bound copy of the book will be placed at the North Yorkshire County Record Office in Northallerton, and another with the library and information service.
A CD-rom is available from Mr Kirby at Fairfax House, 1 Castle Meadows, Snape, Bedale, DL8 2TT, or call 01677-470466
