A TOBACCONIST to the rich and famous has been named the country's leading pipe retailer.

Jim Humberston, who runs Durham Pipe and Tobacco Shop, came out ahead of more than 250 rivals to be named UK Pipe Retailer of the Year.

In the 15 years since he set up shop in Durham's Indoor Market, Mr Humberston's customers have included musicians The Pet Shop Boys, actor Oliver Tobias, comedian Michael Barrymore and dancer and TV personality Lionel Blair.

He has more than 2,000 pipes in stock, including some Alfred Dunhill models worth more than £1,000.

Mr Humberston said: "Initially we started out selling smokers' requisites, but as demand has increased over the years, we have expanded our store and gone from strength to strength.

"Nowadays our customer base extends all over the world, which is a tremendously rewarding feeling."

Judges praised the professionalism and friendliness of the shop's staff.

Mr Humberston, who was a Downing Street police officer during Margaret Thatcher's time as Prime Minister, feels the future is bright, despite the introduction of the ban on smoking in public places.

He said business has improved, possibly because more people are choosing to smoke in private at home.
