AN onion club has declared the season a success, despite the poor weather.
The Ship Onion Club Show, which meets at The Ship pub, in Richmond, held its annual awards on Saturday.
The contest was won by Keith Charlton, with Vic Wilson, second, and Tony Cusick, third.
The most improved grower was Mick Wood, who came sixth, moving up 18 places on last year.
The heaviest onion in the show weighed 4lb 7oz. It was grown by Colin Addison.
Carol Scott, club treasurer, said: "It was an excellent turnout of onions this year, with a lot of close competition by all 30 members, despite the weather this summer having a negative impact.
"Trevor Hill, who judged the show, was very impressed with the standard of onions.
"Once again an excellent weekend was enjoyed by all."
The club's annual meeting will be held at The Ship, at 6pm on Sunday, September 30.
Any regulars, or local people who want to join the onion club, are most welcome to submit a letter to the secretary at the meeting.
