A WOMAN escaped serious injury when the vehicle she was travelling in hit parked cars and flipped onto its roof in Darlington tonight.

Rush hour traffic had to be diverted for nearly an hour whilst wreckage on Grange Road, outside the Majestic Wine Warehouse, was cleared.

The accident happened at about 5.30pm when the womans Volkswagen, travelling away from Darlington town centre, hit a parked BMW, causing extensive damage to the cars rear axle.

The woman was taken to hospital, but a spokesman for the Durham Constabulary said last night that the injuries she had sustained were not serious.

The road reopened at 6.30pm after the upturned Volkswagen was towed away.
