POLICE are warning van owners to be vigilant when leaving tools inside their vehicles after a spate of thefts.
Thirty-three such thefts were reported to police in Stockton between April 1 and August 31 - however, 11 of those occurred last month.
Stockton police's crime reduction officer PC Dave Sanders warned: "Don't let your van be the next target - take a few simple measures to reduce the opportunities for the thief."
He said straight-forward steps could be taken, including:
* Fit good-quality locks and an alarm to the vehicle;
* Always leave the vehicle locked, even when going back and forth to the vehicle for tools etc;
* Do not leave tools in the vehicle overnight;
* Signs should be placed on the vehicle stating no tools are left overnight;
* Make sure access cannot be gained to the storage area from the cab by fitting a partition in the vehicle;
* Fit internal grilles to any rear windows
* All tools should be visibly marked for identification, and makes, model and serial numbers should be recorded.
