A TOBACCONIST to the rich and famous has been named the country's top pipe retailer.
Jim Humberston, who runs Durham Pipe and Tobacco Shop, beat off competition from more than 250 rivals to scoop the prestigious title of UK Pipe Retailer of the Year 2007.
In the 15 years since he set up shop in Durham's Indoor Market, Mr Humberston has served stars including musicians The Pet Shop Boys, actor Oliver Tobias, comedian Michael Barrymore and dancer and TV personality Lionel Blair.
He has more than 2,000 pipes in stock, including some Alfred Dunhill models worth more than £1,000.
Mr Humberston said: "We're very proud to have been nominated UK Pipe Retailer of the Year 2007.
"Initially we started out selling smoker's requisites, but as demand has increased over the years, we've expanded our store and gone from strength to strength.
"Nowadays our customer base extends all over the world, which is a tremendously rewarding feeling."
The Durham Pipe and Tobacco Shop came out top after being assessed on its range, quality and presentation of wares, and judges from the UK Association of Independent Tobacco Specialists also praised the professionalism and friendliness of its staff.
Mr Humberston, who was a 10 Downing Street policeman during Margaret Thatcher's time in power, hand picks most of the pipes sold in his store, to make sure the highest quality is assured.
And he feels the future is bright, despite the introduction of the ban on smoking in public places.
Business has actually improved, he says, possibly because more people are choosing to smoke in private at home.
"We're very happy with the business and would like to thank Durham Markets for all their help and co-operation over the years," he said.
"We're glad to be able to share our expertise in this way and look forward to serving all our customers for many years to come."
