SLAVERY and freedom were the twin themes for three days of music workshops that ended with a big performance yesterday.
Jack Drum Arts led a summer school at Wolsingham School and Community College, where 30 youngsters wrote songs and practised playing unusual musical instruments.
Paddy Burton, who ran the lessons with musician Glynis Manning, said learning about slavery left a deep impression on the children.
He said: "It really made them think.
"They were struck more by the personal aspects than the history.
"They realised that people taken into slavery never saw their families or homes again.
"We have a talked a lot about freedom and oppression and have included Bob Marley songs on the same theme.
"The children have worked very hard."
The summer school was supported by a grant from County Durham's Youth Engagement Service.
