STAFF from a nursing home teamed up with firefighters for an adrenaline-filled charity afternoon.
Workers from St George's Hall and St George's Lodge, in Middleton St George, near Darlington, braved the rapids at the Tees Barrage yesterday.
The white-water rafting event was organised to raise money for the residents' fund at the homes, which are used to provide treats for residents, ranging from electric toothbrushes to weekend breaks.
Organiser Margaret Penman, of Orchard Care Homes, said: "It's been an amazing day.
"Everybody had so much fun - although I think the residents enjoyed seeing us all getting a soaking a little too much."
The event raised more than £1,000 for the fund, which included a donation from North Yorkshire Fire Service.
Crew from Northallerton station were part of the day.
Crew manager Helen Stirling, whose mother lives at one of the homes, said: "I'm delighted to have taken part in the raft race and help raise money for this worthwhile cause."
St George's Hall is a 42-bed home, which provides nursing care for 30 people. St George's Lodge provides specialist nursing care for 31 people with dementia-related conditions such as Alzheimer's.
