A MAN who was dragged to safety by a member of the public, who jumped into the River Tyne to help him, died in hospital tonight.
The 56-year-old man from the South Shields area leapt into the river from a jetty close to the town's Customs House at about 5.15pm today.
A man jumped in to try and help him as members of Northumbria Polices marine unit, the police helicopter and the inshore lifeboat also attended.
The member of the public got to the man and dragged him to the jetty, where the pair were pulled from the water.
The 56-year-old was taken by ambulance to South Tyneside General Hospital, where he later died.
