A really dry white wine from south-west France this week. It's a light straw yellow colour with fruity aromas and hints of elderflower.
The taste is fresh and fruity with an attractive lemony taste and a clean middle palate. It's 13 per cent alcohol but has good acid balance and a fairly long finish. Oz Clark recommends Bordeaux Blanc, which this is, with fish and shellfish.
Bergerac in the Bordeaux area is the provenance for this wine where the standard blend of sauvignon, semillon and muscadelle has been used to good effect. Patricia Atkinson the winemaker has a growing reputation in France and the method of overnight maceration and low temperature fermentation giving full-flavoured wine has paid off. I mention the "Princess" as there's another bottle of the same name called " Nicholas".
Also at Majestic is an unusual wine in that it's made from a grape variety that I hadn't heard of before - sauvignon gris. If you like different wines from the normal you should try this one. It's only a Vin de Pays but retails at £ 7.99. It's called Domaine de la Saubraie and is rather like a blend of sauvignon and semillon although more full-bodied than usual. It's just the wine to go with light poultry dishes.
