ASPIRING music stars, DJs and street dancers will take over a school tomorrow.

Shotton Hall School, in Peterlee, hopes to attract young people from across the area when it hosts an Urban Festival.

Participants will be able to attend DJ workshops, turn their talents to graffiti art and perfect their break dance moves at the event, which will run from 10am to 3pm.

There will also be music by young bands and musicians from the area.

The school is hosting the event with the help of Easington District Council's Pride in Easington team and Easington Community Partnership (CSP).

Michelle Morton, Pride in Easington officer, said: "The event is open to all young people who live in the area and should give them a chance to practise their skills, pick up some tips from experts and meet new people.

"However, we're also hoping it will give us the opportunity to raise awareness of community issues and build stronger links between the young people and those who work in their communities.''

Although the event was initially arranged by the school, it has now been linked to the Don't Damage Your Future campaign, an initiative launched by the CSP to tackle anti-social behaviour in the Eden Hill area of Peterlee.

Council street wardens, police community support officers and police officers will also be taking part in the event.

Organisers hope the festival can become a regular fixture during the school holidays, with events taking place before the start of each term.
