TRAVELLERS who were last night illegally camped on the grounds of a former dog racing track have been warned they face legal action if they stay.
About 40 caravans arrived on the site of the old Spennymoor dog track, in Merrington Lane, on Tuesday evening.
They have been given until next Tuesday to leave.
Gates, which blocked a gravel track leading to the field, had been pulled down and the track was being used to access the site.
About a dozen horses were grazing in the field and there were scores of vans and pick-up trucks.
One resident, who has lived in Spennymoor all his life, said he had never seen a camp of that size in the town.
"I wouldn't mind so much if they treated the place with a bit of respect," he said.
"But you can guarantee the place will be a tip by the time they leave."
It is thought that the travellers are returning from a horse fair in Seaham, on the North-East coast, south of Sunderland, but it is not known where they are heading.
One traveller said the group was doing nothing wrong and just wanted to be left in peace.
"We'll be gone when were gone," he added.
Sedgefield borough councillor for the Low Spennymoor and Tudhoe Grange ward, Andrew Gray, said he inspected the field yesterday.
"The field was certainly being well used and well looked after before they arrived," he said.
"When I went, there were about 35 to 40 mostly expensive-looking modern caravans, but there are a few traditional traps and caravans.
"I've spoken to the relevant department at the council and it's being looked into."
A spokesman for the borough council said last night that the authority was working with the travellers and Durham County Council's liaison officer.
"We are seeking a legal solution to the problem and will be serving papers if anyone is remaining by next Tuesday.
"As this is a play field and recreational land, we will take legal action," he said.
