A MAN who died following a clash outside a strip club was due to get engaged.

Michael Duffin's death was treated as suspicious by Newcastle police after he was found collapsed in the City's Carliol Square in the early hours of Saturday.

Several men were arrested in the probe and were released without charge.

One, a 31-year-old, was bailed pending further inquiries.

The 30-year-old, originally of Ballycastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, was found unconscious after leaving the For Your Eyes Only venue.

He had been living and working in Newcastle for several years.

His father, Brian, a retired housing executive employee, and his mother, Deidre, a retired teacher, had been on holiday in France when the tragedy happened.

The couple also have a daughter, Clare, in her 30s and brother Peter in his mid 20s who both live and work in England.

Mr Duffin is a former pupil at Cross and Passion College in Ballycastle.

Police renewed an appeal for passers-by who may have been in the area of Newcastle's Carliol Square at the time to get in touch.

The victim, of Cartington Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle, had been in the table-dancing club with a friend.

But, after he left, a verbal row broke out in the street between the victim and another group who had also been inside the club that night.

However, police say the incident which led to the 30-year-old collapsing in the street, had nothing to do with events in the club.

Det Chief Insp Mark Anastasi said: "We still need more people who may have been in and round Carliol Square that night and the early hours to get in touch.

"We have had a good response so far, especially from local taxi drivers.

But we are also keen to speak to people who were in the club and may have been leaving at the same time."
