THE first World Cup will be one of the attractions at a celebration of amateur football next week.
The Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, pictured, won by West Auckland Town, who beat Winterthur in 1909 and Juventus in 1911, will be on display at a Durham Amateur Football Trust exhibition next Tuesday.
The event takes place at the club's Darlington Road ground, in the clubhouse, from 7pm.
Also on show will be the Captain's Trophy, awarded to skipper Bob Jones, and a medal given to one of the players following their heyday.
There will also be old cinema reel footage of FA Amateur Cup finals featuring Crook Town, Bishop Auckland and Willington.
Durham Amateur Football Trust committee member Geoff Wood said: "Unfortunately, we don't have any footage of West Auckland's one appearance in the FA Amateur Cup final at Wembley, in 1961. But, hopefully, it will go down well and we're delighted to have the World Cup and other memorabilia."
A smaller exhibition of old photographs and newspaper clippings from West Auckland's final appearance, against Walthamstow Avenue, is being held at West Auckland Village Centre, until Friday.
It is open between 10am and noon. Admission to both events is free, although donations are welcome.
