A MEDICAL centre has appointed its first nurse practitioner.
Lisa Kitson will join Leyburn Medical Practice next month and will hold regular surgeries and clinics.
Nurse practitioners have had a growing role in general practice over the past few years, and can assess, diagnose and treat patients and refer them to hospital if necessary.
Miss Kitson will run clinics for patients with asthma, other chronic breathing difficulties and high blood pressure, and give advice by telephone.
She said: "I can take someone's health history, perform clinical examinations and diagnose and treat many illnesses and conditions.
"In fact, I can do many of the things which family doctors do, such as arrange blood tests, X-rays and referral to hospital doctors, and even prescribe medicines.
"And, of course, I can give advice and guidance on other health-related issues. I suppose, in a way, I act as a bridge between the practice nurse and the GPs, so patients do not always need to see the doctor."
In the past year, she has improved services for patients with respiratory diseases in Hambleton and Richmondshire.
Practice manager Stephen Brown said: "The partners and, indeed, the whole team are delighted to have recruited someone with Lisa's skills, experience and enthusiasm."
Patients can make appointments to see Miss Kitson from next month by calling 01969-622391.
