YOUNG people have been planning for the future with a session designed to help them choose a career.

Experts from professions, including the police, journalism, the leisure industry and veterinary science, offered advice to teenagers in Boroughbridge.

Organised by 4Youth Service, the event took place at Boroughbridge Youth Centre, in Boroughbridge Primary School, and led to a number of follow-up visits, including one to local veterinary practice Rae, Bean and Partners.

The session attracted about 30 young people aged 13 to 19 and was the latest activity staged for young people in Boroughbridge to give them something to do on Tuesday and Friday nights.

Other activities have included a project in which they were lent cameras to take photographs, which they downloaded to laptops for digital manipulation.

They have also made videos about bullying, produced animated films using clay models and taken part in a roller disco.

Senior youth worker Vicki Lever said she was pleased with the careers night.

She said: "When you are young, the last thing you think about is a job.

"But I was amazed at the level of interest shown in careers by the young people.

"We had a lot of support from prospective employers, and I think some useful bridges were built."
