A RECORD number of flowers were on show today at a club's annual Bank Holiday show.

Darlington Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Society held one of its annual shows in the town's St Cuthbert's Church Hall.

The event's biggest winner was Philip Watson, from Bishop Auckland, who walked off with four of the show's trophies.

Classes ranged from chrysanthemums, dahlias, roses, sweet peas and pot plants.

Society secretary Kelvin Vincent said: "Entrants are above what we normally have. The quality of the entrants is exceptional especially considering all the wet weather we have had."

A large number of guests also attended the show to look at the entrants and take advantage of the goods for sale, which also included homemade jams and knitted scarves.

Mr Vincent dedicated the show to former member Benny Llewellyn, who died aged 81 this year after more than five decades as a member of the society.

He added: "He is a big miss to the society. We should dedicate this show to the memory of Benny. He was a very colourful character and was everyone's friend."

The society's next show takes place at Bondgate Methodist Church hall, in Salter's Yard, Bondgate, Darlington, on September 8 and 9, from 12noon to 4pm.

Results: The Crown Galleries Trophy - Philip Watson; Mr E Husband Memorial Trophy - Philip Watson; The R N Nattrass Cup - Phil Orley; National Dahlia Society Silver Medal - Philip Watson; National Dahlia Society Bronze Medal - Philip Watson; The A&W Trophy - Gary Parsons; The Cummins Trophy - Gary Parsons.
