A COMMUNITY cafe has dished up a treat for a national cookery book.
The Goldleaf Community Cafe's recipe for vegetable biryani and mango chutney has been selected to appear in the Fairtrade Everyday Cookbook to be published by Dorling Kindersley, next year.
Workers at the cafe, based at Stockton's Newtown Community Resource Centre, will attend the book launch in London, in February.
Sarah Kumar, development Officer at Newtown and a member of the Stockton Fairtade Steering Group, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for both Goldleaf and Stockton, as it has just been granted Fairtrade borough status, and it's great that a community cafe can contribute to making a change.''
The curry was the top choice of local people visiting the cafe.
The team at Goldleaf Cafe cooked up a number of dishes, using Fairtrade products, and asked local people to vote on which dish should be submitted for the competition.
A panel of expert judges, chaired by TV writer and presenter Sophie Grigson, agreed with them and decided the biryani should be included in the recipe book.
