A MAN is in a "very serious" condition after being attacked by a gang in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The man, 51, who has not been identified, suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Two 17-year-old males were arrested on suspicion of assault and are helping police with their enquiries.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Two people have been arrested after a man was assaulted on his way home, in Wallsend, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
"The 51-year-old was making his way home from an evening out at the Archer Street Club in Wallsend.
"Just before 12.30am, as he walked along Churchill Street, he came into contact with a group of people.
"For reasons still to be established he was assaulted and suffered a serious head injury and he is currently in a very serious condition at North Tyneside Hospital.
"Two 17-year-old males have been arrested for assault and are helping with enquiries."
