COUNCILLORS say a problem caused by blocked drains is set to give Thirsk an unwanted title.
Residents claim smells from blocked drains mean some streets are no-go areas in warm weather.
Thirsk Town Council says the drains, notably in Kirkgate, Millgate and Finkle Street, smell very bad.
Councillor Freda Roberts said: "If we are not careful, Thirsk will be the smelliest town in England.
"On sunny warm days you can't walk down some streets because of the smell."
The town council also wants the drain's gullies cleared of weeds and leaves stopping them from working properly.
North Yorkshire County Council is in charge of clearing the drains and is to be asked to take action.
A county council spokesman said it would investigate the problems with the drains and clean the gullies if necessary.
