A MAN has died after his car collided with a single decker bus last night.
Several passengers on the bus were also believed to have suffered serious, but not life threatening, injuries in the accident on the A6072 near Heighington, County Durham, at about 10.30pm.
A Durham Police spokesman said: "A vehicle has gone under a bus and the driver of the vehicle has been pronounced dead at the scene.
"Some people on the bus have been seriously injured, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening at this point."
The casualties were understood to have been taken by ambulance to local hospitals.
The bus involved was believed to be an Arriva service.
The road was expected to remain closed for some time while police accident investigators assessed the scene.
It followed an earlier accident on the same stretch of road, where a lorry tipped over shedding its load, leading to diversions and severe disruption.
